A Study of Time

A Study of Time invites us to witness a single rose as it quietly changes with time, preserving a story that unfolds one petal at a time. Drawing inspiration from the enchanted rose in Beauty and the Beast—a symbol that marks each passing moment with a falling petal—the artwork becomes a reflection of something far more universal.

With each tablet, the rose slowly transforms from full bloom to its final petal, reminding us that while time is always moving forward, it also offers us the opportunity to grow, to reflect, and to become. Just as the enchanted rose witnessed the Beast's journey of transformation, this series invites us to consider our own.

Designed as a five-part narrative, each artwork captures a different moment in that journey, preserving not just a flower, but a fleeting passage of time.

Why is it Special?

A Study of Time forms part of my limited collection, The Enchanted Rose. While all of my botanical casts preserve nature's fleeting beauty by capturing real flowers in plaster, this series explores something different—it captures the movement of time, rather than its stillness.

Each of the five tablets preserves a single rose at a different stage of its natural life, from full bloom to the final falling petal. Inspired by the enchanted rose in Beauty and the Beast, the petals become almost like grains of sand slipping through an hourglass, quietly marking the passage of time.

Every impression is created using a real rose and my signature botanical casting technique. Each flower is individually pressed into clay by hand before being cast in Plaster of Paris. The artworks are then individually finished using a combination of watercolours, shimmering pigments and hand-applied gilding, creating subtle variations that make every piece one of a kind.

While each tablet stands as a complete artwork in its own right, together the five pieces reveal the full narrative of the rose's journey. Displayed as a series, they become a striking visual story and a lasting conversation piece, while individually each carries its own quiet symbolism and beauty.
